Last week while grocery shopping at Walmart, we saw a sign that said “Welcome Walgreens Customers. ”
“Well,” I thought, “that is odd. I wonder if the Walgreens down the road went out of business…”
As an MBA student, I was curious and began to do a little research. I discovered that the sign was there because of a recent contract that Walgreens was not allowed to renew!
The contract was one with a company called Express Scripts which is a large pharmacy coverage network. This means that people who are members of the Express Scripts program (including all military personnel and their families) are no longer able to buy there prescriptions at Walgreens.
Being forced to change pharmacies is a hassle. Finding a new one that is “in network” can be difficult. Then once you do change you have to get to know the pharmacist and hope you like them and feel like you can trust them. Many people are having to drive farther to get the medicine they need which further increases the cost of their meds. Another thing that is worth mentioning is that Walgreens offers more 24 hour pharmacies than any other pharmacy in the country. Period.
Now all the people that are being forced to change pharmacies are being subjected to strange pharmacists in inconvenient locations that charge more for the same products and that are not open when you really need them. I mean really, how many times have you really needed medicine from 9 to 5? And think about families with kids! Kids are always more sick at night!!
Walgreens is really sad that this has happened because the real hurt is happening to real people. People are being hurt by this and many will be forced to make some tough decisions. As a means to help ease the pain of customers who will be affected by this change Walgreens is offering a phenomenal deal. Walgreens is offering Walgreens Prescription Savings Club to individuals (an annual membership costs $20) and to families (annual membership is $35) for only $5 and $10, respectively. With a membership to the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club members receive special discounts on over eight thousand (that is 8,000!) prescriptions and they are name brand and generic too!
Here are all the details: For $10 a year, a family membership covers everyone in your immediate family, including a spouse, dependents 22 and younger and pets. Individuals may join for $5. Join and receive discount prices on your prescriptions.
Other benefits include:
Savings on more than 8,000 brand-name and all generic medications
Discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies
Bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services
What has happened is outrageous! People are being forced to spend more money, to travel farther, to search for a trustworthy pharmacist, and to be subjected to inconvenience. But Walgreens is trying to heal the hurt caused by another.
